Wolves named to All-Big Country teams
Several Colorado City Wolves were recently named to the All-Big Country teams in Class 2A for the efforts during the football season.
While some of these young men may have exceeded their own expectations, it is fairly safe to assume their names on this list will surprise no one in Colorado City.
Finding his way onto the list three times was Wolves quarterback, Derek Gainey. The 165-pound senior was named as the place kicker for the first team offense, after hitting 33 of 37 extra point attempts this season and going eight out of 10 on field goals.
Gainey was also named as the quarterback for the second team offense. He completed 157 passes to Wolves receivers and backs on 247 attempts for a total of 2,240 yards and 20 touchdowns.
When the need arose, he could also be seen running free through the defenses Colorado City faced, racking up 528 rushing yards and an additional 11 touchdowns.
Gainey was also given as an honorable mention as a punter in Class 2A. In addition, Gainey was named as the second team place kicker for the Super All-Big Country team (Class A-Class 5A).
One of Gainey’s favorite targets this year was receiver Tylor Lorenz.
The six-footer caught 47 passes for 711 yards and seven touchdowns, making the decision to place him on the second team offense a no-brainer.
Also named to the second team offense were three Colorado City linemen. Ryan Rivera, Anthony Rivera and Jake Johnson did not allow a single sack on Gainey in 2011, while combining for 106 cut blocks and 47 pancakes.
In addition, Johnson was also named to the second team defense. The 200-pound junior was responsible for 60 tackles (six for a loss), 59 assists, two quarterback pressures, six forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and two deflected passes.
Linebacker Alex Hernandez was also given honorable mention for his efforts on defense.
