'Cats, 'Dogs end district Friday

The Westbrook Wildcats fell this last week to the Sterling City Eagles in district play. The 46-0 loss marks the second district loss for the 5-5 Wildcats, with only one game remaining in the season.

Sterling City scored four times in the first quarter and three times in the second before the game was called, while Westbrook was unable to find the end zone.

This week, the Wildcats will take on the 6-2 Trent Gorillas. Like Westbrook, the Gorillas have been unable to find a district win, losing to Sterling City and Loraine. While Sterling City and Loraine have already claimed the two playoff spots, the match-up Thursday night should be a good game as Westbrook and Trent battle to gain a win in district, with the winner rising above the bottom rung of the district’s ladder.

The game will be played Thursday night in Westbrook at 7:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Loraine Bulldogs will take on the Sterling City Eagles this week in a match to decide the district champion. Loraine is averaging 53 points per game, while Sterling City generally sees 54 points per game. Both teams are 7-2, with perfect 2-0 district records.

With the district title on the line between these two high-powered offensive teams, the fireworks should fly early and often. Sterling City is currently ranked No. 3 and Loraine sits at No. 9 in six-man. This is the game of the week in Division II. Sterling City brings two of the top running backs in six-man into this game.

“They’re, perhaps, the best two in state,” Bulldog Head Coach Richard Jackson said Monday. “We’ve got to be consistent with no fumbles.”

The game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday night in Loraine.
If the Bulldogs win, they’ll be representing the district as champions and will enter the play-offs against the winner of the Paint Creek-Blackwell game.

The loser of Friday’s contest will play Paint Rock in the first round of the play-offs as the district runner-up.
