Bulldogs tame 'Cats in rival match
In fantastic fashion, the Loraine Bulldogs opened their district schedule with a 76-30 defeat of their cross county rivals, the Westbrook Wildcats. Both teams had plenty of support in the game as fans made the trip to Loraine for the clash.
The Bulldogs got out to a fast start, scoring twice in the game’s first six minutes. Nate Martinez hit Brandon Gibson on a 26-yard slant route and then Gibson hit Este Benivamondez, who found the end zone from 25 yards out.
Westbrook’s first flash of life came on the ensuing kick off. Alex Gaona took the ball on his own 30-yard line. He then dashed 70 yards to get the Wildcats on the board. But the score was matched almost immediately when Loraine’s Tim Garza broke free from 14 yards out. The two teams would trade touchdowns again before the quarter ended with Westbrook up 28-12.
The second quarter gave the fans more of the same as Loraine got on the board first with a 42 yard Garza touchdown run. Again Westbrook answered with a long kickoff return of 75 yards. Then Gibson connected with Sean Casey for a 25-yard pass which found the end zone. Casey Bass answered quickly, hitting Gaona from 46 yards out for Westbrook. But Loraine would end the half strong, scoring three more times before the buzzer sounded and going into the locker rooms with a 64-24 lead over Westbrook.
Kyle Beights opened the third quarter, breaking free for 47 yards and a Westbrook touchdown, but the game almost wrapped up by Loraine at this point. To prove that point, Gibson scored on a 42-yard scamper immediately after the Westbrook score. Then, with 18 seconds left in the third quarter, Bulldog Cody Haltom scored his first touchdown of the season. This would bring an early end to the game as Loraine defeats Westbrook, 76-30.
Friday night, Loraine (1-0) will travel to Trent to play the Gorillas (0-1), while Westbrook (0-1) will take the trip to Sterling City to face the 6-2 (1-0) Eagles.
