Realignment could mean tough road ahead for Wolves

Well, the realignments are final and the gods of the UIL have bestowed blessings upon some area teams and visited curses upon others.
The Colorado City Wolves will drop to District 4-2A in Region I of District II, a move many in Colorado City had hoped to see.

In Colorado’ district will be some familiar foes in Ballinger and Coleman. Though the Wolves made short work of Coleman this season with a decisive 30-14 win this season and a 39-0 trouncing in 2010, Ballinger is a team which has played Colorado to the wire in non-district play the last two seasons. The Wolves grabbed a 27-24 win in 2011, while escaping with a 24-21 win in 2010.

Ballinger went 5-1 in district last season, but their district was a bit lighter than this season should prove to be.

But the match between Ballinger and Colorado City should prove to be a good rivalry, with the winner claiming some much-needed momentum in their run for the title. Also in Colorado’s new district will be Cisco, Hamilton and Hawley.

Hawley missed the playoffs last season by one point. Forsan had to beat Hawley by 13 points to claim the final spot and did exactly that, ending Hawley’s miracle season just shy of heaven.

Cisco, well what can we say? The Loboes came just one point of a 17-0 season, not to mention a state title in 2011. They will need to regroup a bit after a large portion of their team graduates in May, but look for them to be tough again.

Finally, we come to Hamilton. The Bulldogs made the playoffs in 2011 and even got post-season win before running into Idalou. They took the third playoff spot behind Cisco and will be another team Colorado will want to take a close preseason look at in 2012.

In basketball, the Wolves will only see a few changes in their district schedules. Grouped with Colorado City in Region I, District 4 will be Coahoma, Denver City and Stanton.

Disappearing from the district schedule will be Forsan, Post and Roosevelt, while Lamesa and Brownfield will both drop down out of 3A to join the ranks of those hoping to take down the Wolves.
