Burglars hit Colorado ISD
The Colorado ISD administration building, located at the corner of 11th Street and Hickory in Colorado City was the scene of a burglary this weekend.
According to school superintendent Reggy Spencer, an unknown number of suspects – though Spencer believes the number to be two, based on eyewitness accounts – broke into the school building, presumably through the roof, around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night.
Workers arrived Monday morning to find a broken window leading into the administration office and several missing or damaged items. Several offices had been sprayed down with a fire extinguisher during the break-in as well.
Spencer said a video camera was taken, along with several Applebee’s gift certificates intended to be given out at Monday night’s school board meeting.
Many laptops as well as desktop computers were left untouched throughout the building.
A large safe appeared to be the center of attention, according to Superintendent Spencer.
“They spent a lot of time on the safe,” he said. “They used a grinder to grind the hinges off of the exterior door to the safe.”
The intruders managed to get two of the hinges off of the safe and were close to getting the door open, when they left the building for unknown reasons.
“They took the hinges with them,” Mr. Spencer added. “The sad thing is there really is not much in the safe. We keep less than $100 for petty cash and that is all, besides school records. I really am not sure what they hoped to find.”
Aside from the camera, and hinges, the intruders left with keys to the building. Spencer said that would not be an issue as the school would have the locks re-keyed.
The incident is currently under investigation with the Colorado City Police Department. Lt. John Bivins, when asked to comment on the crime, said he could not, due to the ongoing investigation.
The administration building was the target of criminal mischief during the Christmas holidays as well, when individuals cut slits in the screens covering windows. One window was broken during that particular episode, but it is not known if anyone entered the building or if they were simply getting an idea of what might be inside the building.
