Hats off to a fun time

Our Mad Hatter Tea Party was delightful and the Alice in Wonderland movie was the finishing touch. Hats and costumes transformed the participants into wonderful, whimsical characters. It was a special opportunity for mother-daughter, grandmom-granddaugher or friend-bonding in a delightful way.

Saturday shoppers and special events

Last Saturday morning started with weed control in the islands downtown and ended with the meeting of some delightful shoppers in our downtown area.  The family consisted of Vernon, lovely Trena (should have written the spelling down!), David, and spunky Stella visiting here from California.  I was told that I missed meeting sister Nellie because of work duties.

City growth begins downtown

Our Main Street program works for the preservation and revitalization of a 16 block historic downtown area.  People often ask why is our downtown so important and I have many answers to that question.

We have touched on the subject before, but I thought it might be good to list all the reasons with some explanation on each.

Downtown is a prominent employment center.  Our commercial district employs hundreds of people.

High culture takes the stage at the Opera House

An Evening of Elegance was a smashing success and those in attendance were lucky enough to experience the very best that Colorado City has to offer.

Red and white table cloths with gold candelabras embellished with red and white roses set the stage for the best gourmet meal available.  Bama’s served pork tenderloin with a scrumptious sauce, scalloped potatoes, Venetian vegetables, baby butter lettuce salad, Roxie’s famous rolls and a to-die-for heart-shaped cheesecake.  A special thank you to Roxie and her staff for creating the masterpiece meal.

Social media promotes small businesses

Business owners are always looking for promotion ideas and Main Street has a seminar scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday at the Civic Center to help entrepreneurs.  Russ Altman from the Texas Tech Small Business Development Center will demonstrate how to use social media to promote your business featuring Facebook, Twitter, websites and newsletters.  Many merchants are using at least one of these media and have seen increased business as a result.  We will have snacks and look forward to your participation in this opportunity.

New year, new opportunities

Main Street welcomes a new year with so many opportunities to undertake new challenges and continue work on projects that are already underway.  We welcome two new businesses to our historic downtown located in historic downtown buildings.

Warm hearts light up a cold night

The air may have been cold, but the shoppers had their hearts warmed by the Christmas activities during Light Before Christmas.  Shae White and Tabbatha Angelo sang beautifully to an appreciative audience and Chris Cloutier and family manned our wonderful lights and sound system.

Dana Mayfield and her crew sat in the cold at the Inspiration Park marshmallow-roasting fire pit for five hours and deserve a very special award of some sort.  Stacie Goswick passed out free popcorn to add to the seasonal scents.

Catch the spirit of Christmas

Mark your calendars for Friday, December 4, and make plans with your family and friends to attend the Main Street Light Before Christmas event.

Many stores will be open from 5 to 9 p.m., with the lighting of the tree at Friendly Park at 6 p.m. After the lighting, Santa will make his appearance at 6 p.m. at the Main Event with pictures available if you wish. Carolers on a special stage will fill the air with magical music during the evening.

Junktique leaves 'em speechless

Fabulous, exceptional, amazing, inspiring, outstanding, marvelous and perfect were just some of the words used to describe the weekend in Colorado City. Never before have we had so many choices for entertainment in our city, and it was wonderful.

Ghosts, bagpipes, mariachis make magical mixture

Ghosts will abound this weekend and make an appearance before the usual Halloween festivities. You will get a chance to go back in time to a wild west city full of exciting characters and stories.

Our historical gunslinger will guide you through the sites and sounds of special happenings in our downtown. Gather your friends and family and go back in time.

The times scheduled for these tours are 6, 7, 8, 9 p.m., starting at the Railhead Building. Be prepared to experience thrills and chills.
